A basic tuning within Red Deer is $130. Out of town tunings range from $140-$180, depending on the distance.
Moves are quoted based on the difficulty, number of stairs, distance, size of piano, etc. I can give an accurate quote after asking a few questions. Sometimes, I will request you to text me pictures of stairways and pianos so I have the most accurate information.
Home pianos should be tuned about once a year. Pianos that are used in churches, schools, senior's homes, or other commercial settings usually need to be tuned more often. A piano should also be tuned shortly after a move. I recommend trying to keep the season in which the piano is tuned consistent.
For tuning I will travel up to 200 km outside of the city. For moves I will travel as far as they need to go, including out of province and even out of the country.
Time and humidity changes are what causes a piano to go out of tune more than anything else.
I (Steve) am the only tuner that will come to your house. I will also be the one doing the piano move, alongside employees that have been with me for many years.
When a piano sits for too many years without being tuned it keeps going further and further flat. When it is too far flat and it is brought up to pitch it will drop a little flat again almost immediately. A pitch raise is simply a quick initial tuning done before the fine tuning. There is an additional charge for this service.
Yes I can. Over the years I have established a large collection of century old ivory "heads" that are in great condition. These can be used to replace chipped or missing ivory heads on your piano. It is a meticulous job from matching to sanding to polishing but the results are beautiful.
No, some pianos are in such disrepair that they can no longer hold a tune for a reasonable amount of time. The most common problem that will make a piano untunable is a cracked pin block (not to be confused with the soundboard). The above picture is how I send them to piano heaven.
No, a piano will still play and hold its tune with a crack or cracks in the soundboard. However, because the soundboard is the speaker of the piano the quality of sound can be affected. Soundboard cracks can also cause annoying buzzes or rattles. It is an issue that can usually be repaired.
This is something that rang true decades ago when houses were not insulated well. Modern houses are insulated well enough that there is not a significant temperature difference between an outside or inside wall. If you do live in an older home this could be a concern. Also, you do not want your piano placed on a heat register.
I have been in the piano industry since childhood. Growing up in the family business has given me a passion for pianos, and my extensive schooling and decades of experience have given me the expertise to back that passion. Also, it is great to support a local business.
